Way back in 2006 I purchased my second Square Body Chevy truck. It was a ’74 model but we had updated the front sheetmetal to parts taken from a 1987 Chevy Suburban.

This is the truck that would solidify my love of road trips and this particular body style. At the time I was the editor of Sport Truck Magazine and alongside the Tech Editor of the mag, Calin Head, I embarked on a cross-country road trip from California to Tennessee and back in my new ride. We had already lowered the truck while adding Vintage Wheelworks “Minilite” style wheels. We also LS-swapped the truck in my friend Tim’s driveway before left town.

The goal was to drive to a car show while making the truck cooler during the trip. In Texas, I bought bull horns from a roadside vendor and bolted them atop the hood where the Chevy emblem once resided. We also stopped at Kustom Werx in Conroe, Texas and spent several days with Cory Scott straightening the sheetmetal and painting the truck blue. It looked so damn good! By the time we arrived at the Relaxed Atmosphere All-star event our Square Body was lookin tough and we even won an award for driving further than anyone else did to attend the event.

On the way home I got a glimpse of what my future would be like on Roadkill as the truck’s fuel system died. I made it home by purchasing five plastic gas cans and mounting a cheap fuel pump in the bed of the truck with zip ties. A length of rubber hose connected my 5 gallon fuel jugs to the pump and the engine. Every 40 or so miles I’d run out of gas, coast to a stop, and hop in the bed of the truck to move the fuel line from the empty jug to a full one. I made about 30 fuel stops on the way home and almost every time I pulled over, someone stopped to check on me and say they loved my truck.

You know why? Because Square Body trucks rule and I’m about that life. Get this shirt even if you don’t own a Chevy Square Body and let the cuddly softness take you away on a magical tour of style. It’s less expensive and almost as fun as the real thing.
