To the 34/46th crew, metric tools are an irritating fact of life. How can a unit of measurement be so utterly simple and at the same time absolutely infuriating?

I place the blame squarely on just one double digit number in a sea of decimal points—the 10mm. The 10 is universally feared because it’s used everywhere in modern automobile construction and it’s the one most commonly lost when working on a project car.

Don’t believe me? Crack open the tool box of anyone with a car built after 1992 and I guarantee the 10mm socket is missing. The obvious question is did the socket disappear because it’s used on the daily or is it gone because there’s something inherently diabolical about the number 10? It gets no better than a perfect 10 in sports and when sizing up someone of the opposite sex but for some reason when you put the “mm” next to that number suddenly it gets weird and lost—seemingly on purpose.
